MacBook battery health and cycle count: where to look, and what the numbers mean

macOS keeps battery health and cycle count on two different screens, and tells you neither what your model was rated for nor when the wear actually matters. Here is where both numbers live, what they mean, and how to decide between a new battery and a new Mac.

macOS keeps the two numbers you came for on two different screens, which is most of why this question is hard to answer quickly.

For battery health, open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, click Battery in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down), and look at Battery Health. It reads either Normal or Service Recommended, and the info button beside it opens a panel with Maximum Capacity as a percentage.

Cycle count is not on that screen. Hold the Option key, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then open Hardware and select Power. Cycle Count sits under Battery Information.

Both paths were checked on macOS 26.2, and Apple documents the same ones for Sonoma 14 and Sequoia 15. If you are chasing a battery that empties fast today rather than one worn down over years, that is a different question: what's draining your Mac's battery covers it.

What a charge cycle actually is

Apple's definition is narrower than most people assume. "A charge cycle happens when you use all of the battery's power, but that doesn't necessarily mean in a single charge." Use half your charge today, recharge, use half again tomorrow, and that is one cycle, not two.

So the count is much lower than the number of times you have plugged in. Someone who tops up from 70% to 100% three times a day has spent roughly one cycle, not three.

What your model is rated for

Apple publishes a per-model maximum, and the numbers are not close. The old figures still circulating online belong to machines from the 2000s.

If your Mac is younger than about fifteen years, it is almost certainly a 1,000-cycle machine. The rating is a design target: at that count the battery "is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity."

What happens when you pass it

Nothing switches off. Apple's wording is that "the battery is considered consumed once it reaches the limit," and that "you can use your battery after it reaches its maximum cycle count, but you might notice a reduction in your battery life."

A six-year-old MacBook Air at 950 cycles is not failing. It has delivered what the cell was designed to deliver, and from here it holds less each year. Whether that matters depends on how far you carry it from a plug.

What maximum capacity means

Maximum capacity "measures the device battery capacity relative to when it was new." A brand-new Mac can read a point or two below 100%, because chemical ageing starts the day the cell is made, well before your first login.

The number that gives it meaning is 80%, the level Apple designs the battery to still reach at its rated cycle count.

Cycle count and capacity often disagree. Few cycles with poor capacity points at heat or age rather than use, since a battery's lifespan depends on its chemical age, which Apple attributes to temperature history and charging pattern.

Normal versus Service Recommended

These are the only two verdicts macOS offers, and Apple defines them precisely.

Normal means "the battery is functioning normally." Service Recommended means the battery's ability to hold charge is less than when it was new, or that it is not functioning normally. Apple is clear that the second is not an emergency: you can safely continue using the Mac, and "you can continue to use your battery before it's checked without harming your computer."

One wrinkle on Intel Macs. Battery health management there reduces peak charging capacity on purpose, and Apple notes that the resulting limit "might update your battery status menu to indicate a need for service." The status can shift because of the feature protecting the battery.

Under AppleCare, a battery retaining less than 80% of its original capacity is replaced at no charge. Out of coverage there is a fee, and Apple points you at a per-model estimate rather than publishing one number, so get yours before writing the machine off.

Is Optimized Battery Charging worth leaving on

Yes, and the reasoning is in Apple's own description. Optimized Battery Charging "is designed to reduce the wear on your battery and improve its lifespan by reducing the time that your Mac spends fully charged." It learns your routine and delays charging past 80% when it expects a long stretch on power, aiming to have you full by the time you unplug. While it holds, the battery menu reads Charging On Hold, and Charge to Full Now overrides it. Available since macOS Big Sur.

On macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later with Apple silicon there is a firmer option: System Settings, Battery, the info button next to Charging, then a Charge Limit anywhere between 80% and 100%. The Mac still charges to 100% occasionally "to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates," so a limit does not blind it.

What nobody can tell you is how many extra cycles this buys. Apple describes the mechanism and never the magnitude, and anyone quoting a percentage of extra lifespan made it up.

What actually extends lifespan

The short list with a documented basis:

  • Keep it cool. Apple puts MacBook's comfort zone at 50 to 95°F (10 to 35°C) and says ambient temperatures above 95°F "can permanently damage battery capacity." Heat is the one factor where Apple describes the harm as permanent.
  • Leave Optimized Battery Charging on, for the reason above.
  • Store it around 50% if the Mac is going in a drawer for months. Not empty, not full.
  • Take it out of a thick case while charging if it runs hot in there, which Apple flags as a way to lose capacity.

Since heat matters most here, a Mac that runs hot as routine is a battery problem too. Loud fans and a hot Mac covers the usual causes, and checking your CPU temperature covers measuring it honestly. A kernel_task at the top of Activity Monitor is macOS already trying to cool the machine down.

What does not

Deliberate full discharges are the most persistent myth. Howard Oakley puts it plainly: "don't feel that you have to put the battery through cycles in which you discharge it as fully as possible before recharging, as that's not required for a good lifespan." The habit is inherited from nickel-based batteries Macs stopped using long ago.

Calibration tools are the second. Apple's current Mac battery documentation contains no calibration procedure, and macOS already tops up to 100% now and then to keep its own state-of-charge estimate accurate. There is nothing left to calibrate.

Which leads to the third. Apple's guidance is unusually blunt: "third-party apps that report battery-health conditions might not be accurate or conclusively indicate diminished system runtime. It's best to rely on the battery-health information reported by macOS." If an app shows a health percentage that disagrees with System Settings, doubt the app. The same scepticism serves you well on Mac cleaners and what they actually free.

Unplugging by hand at 80% belongs here too, once Optimized Battery Charging is on. You are doing manually what the Mac already does on a schedule it learned from you.

New battery, or new Mac?

Take the three readings together, because individually they mislead.

Service Recommended, capacity under 80%, and cycles near your model's rating together describe a battery at the end of its designed life. A battery is a consumable part, and replacing it in an otherwise working machine is usually the cheaper decision.

Condition Normal and capacity in the nineties, but a sluggish Mac, means the battery is not your problem. Start with why your Mac is slow, or Mac slow after a macOS update if the timing fits. On 8 GB, whether that is still enough matters more than anything on the Battery screen.

Good capacity with poor endurance usually means something is running that you have not noticed, which is the drain question again.

Knowing before you decide

Both numbers are already on your Mac, on two screens that do not reference each other. Neither mentions what your model was rated for, and the figure that settles the argument (80% capacity) is never drawn as a line.
