Your MacBook fans are loud and running hot, and it feels like something is wrong. First, the reassuring part: fans spinning up is not a fault. It's the cooling system doing exactly its job. When the CPU or GPU heats up, the fans speed up to move that heat out. The real question isn't how to quiet the fans; it's what is working the CPU or GPU hard enough to make them spin. Find that, and the noise usually takes care of itself.
Why your MacBook fans get loud and run hot
A Mac that never spun its fans would be a Mac that couldn't cool itself. Under real load (exporting video, compiling code, a browser full of heavy tabs, a game, or even a hot afternoon), the temperature climbs and the fans respond. That's the system working, not breaking.
Macs are also built to run warm and to throttle themselves long before anything is at risk. Apple lists a normal operating range of about 50° to 95°F (10° to 35°C). So a warm case and busy fans during a demanding task are expected. What's worth investigating is the other pattern: hot and loud for a long time while you're doing little or nothing. That points to a process running away in the background, and it's findable.
Find the process first (Activity Monitor)
Before changing any settings or installing anything, see what's actually running the machine hot. It takes a minute.
- Open Activity Monitor (in Applications → Utilities, or search for it with Spotlight).
- Click the CPU tab, then click the % CPU column so the busiest processes rise to the top.
- Click the Energy tab and look at Energy Impact: on laptops this also flags apps that have been costing power over time, not just right now.
Read the name at the top of the list. That single word usually tells you what's heating the machine, and what to do about it.
Match the process to the cause

If the process at the top is one you recognize and were actively using, the heat makes sense; that's normal under load. It's the unfamiliar name sitting high while you're idle that's worth chasing.
Don't forget the physical causes
Sometimes the heat isn't a process at all. It's the environment. Even with nothing pegging the CPU, these make a Mac run hot and loud:
- A hot room, or blocked vents. Using a laptop on a bed, couch cushion, or blanket traps heat against the vents. Move it to a hard, flat surface and out of direct sun.
- Dust. Over years, clogged fans and aged thermal paste make everything run hotter. On an older machine, a cleaning helps.

- An aging battery. A worn or swollen battery can run warm and sit oddly against the case; if your Mac is hot even at idle and its battery health is low (Apple menu → System Settings → Battery), it's worth having checked. This one is less about CPU load and more about the hardware itself.
What not to do
When a Mac runs hot, the tempting move is to install a "fan control" app to force the fans faster, or a "cleaner" that promises to cool things down. Skip both as a first resort. Overriding fan curves treats the symptom while hiding the cause, and cleaners don't lower the temperature of a runaway process; they just add another thing running. Find the process first. Nine times out of ten the fix is quitting one app, unplugging one peripheral, or waiting out a background task, not new software.

None of this needs a special tool. But by the time you open Activity Monitor, the culprit has often already calmed down, which makes it hard to catch a fan that only roars when you step away. It can also set the fans to Auto, Cool or Max, and the advice above still stands: leave them on Auto until you know what is making the heat. A forced fan is a way to live with a cause you have already identified, not a way to find one. It never deletes anything to "cool" the machine.
